An article by TI Ireland’s Head of Policy and Research, Dr Alexander Chance, has been published by the Azure Forum for Contemporary Security Strategy, entitled ‘Stepping up the fight against corruption and money laundering in the EU and Ireland’. The article, which is published as part of the Azure Forum’s ‘Strategic Insights’ series, draws on the findings of EU-funded research by TI across nine European countries – including Ireland – to highlight the main obstacles to the detection, investigation and prosecution of complex corruption and international money laundering. The article suggests that upcoming policy and strategy developments at both EU and domestic level offer time-limited opportunities to step up the fight against these challenges. However, effectiveness will depend upon a clear-eyed assessment of the threats posed by corruption and money laundering, and the State’s ability to direct an integrated, whole-of-society response to those threats. This requires recognition that Ireland’s role as an international financial centre amplifies the country’s exposure to dirty money. The article is available on the Azure Forum’s Substack here.
